Startup or Big Tech?

I often get asked by young software engineers “Should I go to work for a startup or big tech”?

While I believe the field of options for talented engineers has broadened to also consider tech roles in a “traditional” business or civic tech, my answer is usually that an engineer should try both early in their career to see what fits better for them.
